The Gateway to Yosemite
Merced is one of California's best-connected cities. Whether you're driving, riding the rails, or flying in getting here is easy.
Regional Access
Multiple routes and options make Merced accessible from anywhere in California and beyond.
Merced sits at the crossroads of two major California routes. Highway 99 runs north-south through the Central Valley, connecting Merced to Sacramento (2 hrs north) and Fresno (1 hr south). Highway 140 heads east from Merced directly into Yosemite National Park — making it the most scenic and popular western gateway to the park.
The Amtrak San Joaquins line stops directly in downtown Merced, making it easy to arrive car-free. Trains run daily from Sacramento, Oakland/Emeryville, and Bakersfield. The Merced station also connects to YARTS (Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System) buses, so you can go from train to Yosemite without ever needing a car.
Two airports serve the Merced area, giving you flexibility whether you prefer a small regional flight or a larger hub with more options:
The closest option, located right in Merced. Limited commercial service with regional connections. Ideal for private aviation and charter flights.
The nearest major airport, about 1 hour south of Merced on Highway 99. Served by all major airlines with daily flights from most US cities.
